One of the
most elaborate sculptures of the Madonna della Misericordia
but difficult to admire because of its location on a narrow
fondamenta. Mary holds the cloak with her hands. Jesus in a
mandorla is on her chest. Late XIV century with later decorative
details. Restored in 1995.
How to get there. From
the vaporetto stop at Ca' d'Oro take Calle Ca' d'Oro to Strada
Nova,
turn left on Strada Nova. Cross the first bridge (Ponte Novo S. Felice)
and turn right immediately after the bridge on Fondamenta de la Chiesa
which soon becomes Fondamenta San Felice. Go to the end of the
fondamenta, about 200 meters, and turn left on Ramo de la Misericordia,
cross the
bridge of the same name, and you will be on Fondamenta de la
Misericordia. Take Fondamenta de la Misericordia to your right. Cross
Ponte de l'Abazia to Campo de l'Abazia where you will see the Scuola
Vecchia de la Misericordia with the scar of the relief now in London
(Madonna # 1).
Walk under the sotoportego of the scuola on the side of the canal. The
first intersection on your right is Corte Nova. The relief is above the
entrance to the corte. Madonna # 12 is nearby.
